At the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, 2025 was defined not only by programs and progress, but by people. The faculty and staff who support, mentor, teach, and care for students every day continue to be the college’s greatest strength. Selected by their peers, the awards celebrated four individuals whose dedication, leadership, and service exemplified the heart of NCTA and the life-changing impact of a small campus with the critical mission of preparing students for agricultural and animal health careers.

Vicky Luke, Stewart Family Faculty and Staff Award
Vicky Luke, registration and curriculum specialist, was named the 2025 recipient of the Stewart Family Faculty and Staff Award. Sponsored by UNSTA alumnus Jim Stewart and his family, the award, now in its third year, recognizes one faculty or staff member who has had an extraordinary impact on the life of an NCTA student and includes a $1,000 gift.

With more than 28 years of service, Luke has guided hundreds of students through academic decisions with exceptional knowledge, creativity, and determination. Known for her ability to provide clear answers and reassurance to students and families alike, she is widely respected for her understanding of student needs. Beyond her professional expertise, Luke’s kindness, empathy, and steady support make her a trusted mentor and friend across campus.

Crystal Rhine, DVM, Bruntz Family Award for Teaching
Dr. Crystal Rhine, assistant professor of Veterinary Technology, received the 2025 Bruntz Family Award for Teaching, one of NCTA’s highest honors for instructional excellence. Established in memory of Julie Bruntz by her parents, Ann and David Bruntz, the award recognizes educators who inspire confidence, nurture potential, and positively shape students’ futures.

Dr. Rhine is known for her clarity, compassion, and deep commitment to student success. She creates calm, supportive classroom and laboratory environments where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and building confidence. Her teaching style balances high academic standards with encouragement, helping students tackle challenging material with assurance.

Students consistently credit Dr. Rhine with presenting complex information in accessible, practical ways and anticipating areas where learners may struggle. Her instruction reflects current best practices in veterinary medicine, supported by hands-on laboratories and an open-door approach that welcomes students at all levels.

Dr. Rhine’s leadership in the development and 2025 launch of NCTA’s online Veterinary Technology program, helping extend the program’s high standards and student-centered approach to learners beyond campus.

Chrissy Barnhart, NCTA Community Award
Chrissy Barnhart, office associate for the Veterinary Technology program, was recognized with the 2025 Community Award. In a short time, Barnhart has become indispensable to the program through her dependability, enthusiasm, and deep care for students and animals alike.

A former NCTA student, Barnhart supports students academically and emotionally, assists with classes, provides expert animal care, and ensures program operations run smoothly. She also plays a vital role in outreach and public relations for the Veterinary Technology program and NCTA as a whole. Through Discovery Days, community visits, and animal outreach to local schools and preschools, Barnhart helps tell the NCTA story, building positive connections with families, educators, and future students.

Her commitment extends year-round, and her ability to represent NCTA with professionalism, warmth, and authenticity makes her an essential ambassador for the college and a key contributor to the program’s success.

Nathan Nicklas, John and Lillian Memorial Excellence in Service Award
Nathan Nicklas, residence life manager, was selected as the 2025 recipient of the John and Lillian Memorial Excellence in Service Award. The award recognizes employees whose service significantly enhances the campus community.

Since joining NCTA, Nicklas has strengthened residence life through improved policies, resident assistant recruitment and training, and expanded intramural sports and campus activities. His leadership has elevated the overall quality and consistency of student services, contributing to a safer, more supportive residential environment.

Beyond operational improvements, Nicklas is widely respected for his people-centered approach. He is known as a steady and uplifting presence on campus, consistently showing up for students during both celebrations and challenges. Whether resolving roommate conflicts, checking in after difficult weeks, or building community through activities, Nicklas demonstrates a level of care and accountability that strengthens campus culture.

Together, these four award recipients reflect what makes NCTA exceptional: dedication, compassion, leadership, and a shared commitment to student success. NCTA extends its sincere congratulations and gratitude to Vicky Luke, Dr. Crystal Rhine, Chrissy Barnhart, and Nathan Nicklas for the lasting impact they made in 2025 and for the difference they continue to make every day on campus.
