UNK ranks No. 10 nationally among top 100 rural colleges

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney ranks No. 10 nationally in Washington Monthly’s inaugural Top 100 Rural Colleges rankings.

The rankings recognize colleges and universities for serving students from rural communities, providing affordable educational opportunities and preparing graduates for careers that strengthen rural economies.

The recognition highlights UNK’s commitment to serving Nebraska students and developing the workforce needed to support communities across the state. This fall, UNK students represent 91 of Nebraska’s 93 counties, reflecting the university’s broad reach and connection to communities across the state.

“UNK has always been deeply connected to the communities we serve, spanning 430 miles across greater Nebraska,” said Chancellor Neal Schnoor. “Our mission is to create opportunities for students, prepare them for meaningful careers and help build a stronger future for our state. This recognition reflects the important work happening across our university and the lasting impact our graduates have on Nebraska’s communities and workforce.”

Washington Monthly evaluated 225 eligible colleges and universities using measures that emphasize student access, affordability, graduation outcomes, workforce preparation and graduates’ connections to their home states.

UNK performed particularly well in areas that reflect its statewide impact:
-86% of UNK students come from Nebraska, demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to serving in-state students.
-66% of UNK graduates remain in Nebraska after earning their degrees, contributing to the state’s workforce and communities.
-42% of graduates earn degrees in fields identified as high demand in rural America, including professions important to the long-term vitality of rural communities.
-$14,307 annual net price, reflecting the estimated cost of attendance after financial aid.
-$56,647 in annual earnings for graduates four years after graduation, adjusted for local housing costs.

For UNK, the recognition underscores its role as a regional university focused on educational access, student success and workforce development. Through academic programs in health sciences, education, business, technology, aviation and other fields, the university prepares graduates to meet the evolving needs of Nebraska employers and communities.

Washington Monthly’s Top 100 Rural Colleges rankings offer a different perspective from traditional college rankings by emphasizing how well institutions serve students and contribute to the public good, particularly in rural areas.
