FURNAS COUNTY, NE – The Furnas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle fatal accident that occurred on the evening of Sunday, April 19, 2026, southeast of Cambridge.
At approximately 9:26 PM, the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident near Road 412 and 720. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 1990 Jeep Wrangler that had rolled over and landed on its roof in a ditch.
One occupant, identified as Cooper L. Wendland, 21, of Holbrook, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two occupants—a 19-year-old male and a 16-year-old female—were able to exit the vehicle and self-transported to Tri Valley Health Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial investigation indicates that the driver failed to negotiate a right turn on the gravel surface. The vehicle fish-tailed on washboards, causing it to run off the road into the east ditch and flip onto its top. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the accident, though official toxicology results are currently pending. Seatbelts were not in use.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to Cambridge Fire/Rescue and the Cambridge Ambulance Service for their prompt assistance at the scene.
Anyone that believes that they may have information relevant to this case is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 308-268-2245.
