NEMA Urges Nebraskans to Prepare Before Disaster Strikes

September 1, 2026 (LINCOLN, NEB.)  —  As National Preparedness Month begins, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is encouraging Nebraskans to take steps now to prepare for emergencies and disasters, which can happen at any time. Wildfires have significantly impacted communities across Nebraska this year and can spread quickly.

“The best time to prepare for an emergency is before it happens,” said NEMA Assistant Director Erv Portis. “Taking a few minutes to make a plan and gather essential supplies today can help you and your family respond more safely tomorrow.”

One of the easiest ways to prepare is to build or update an emergency supply kit. Nebraskans should consider keeping a kit at home, at work, and in their vehicles.

Emergency kits should include:
-At least one gallon of water per person per day for three days
-A three-day supply of non-perishable food and a manual can opener
-First aid supplies and necessary medications or medical items for the entire family
Flashlight and extra batteries
-Phone chargers and a portable power bank
-Pet supplies
-Important family documents stored electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
 
For families experiencing food insecurity, local community food banks may be a resource for assistance in putting together a basic emergency kit. Once a kit is assembled, store it in a safe, accessible location and make sure everyone in the household knows where to find it. Families should also take time to discuss their emergency plans, including how they will communicate and where they will go if they need to evacuate.
