Nebraska State Treasurer Touches on a Variety of Subjects

Joey Spellerberg

Joey Spellerberg has been the Nebraska State Treasurer about six months.

He was appointed by Governor Pillen in early November 2026. He and his team have accomplished a lot, including:
 Worked with multiple state lawmakers to pass five key bills introduced on behalf of the Treasurer: -
-First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account Act (LB 938 and LB 803); -
-NEST 529 flexibility for skilled-trade training and credential programs (LB 748); - Additional protection for beneficiaries of the Enable Savings Plan, which serves individuals with disabilities (LB 1240);
- Updating the state’s advertising requirement for Unclaimed Property, allowing us to reach all 93 counties (LB 869 and LB 596); and -
-Adjusting the Unclaimed Property law to protect the State’s ability to pay claims and to conduct timely audits of unclaimed property holders (LB 1074 and LB 1075).

His office has returned $6.57 million (as of April 12) year-to-date in unclaimed property compared to $4.51 million at the same time last year. • Highlighted our Treasury Management team’s efforts that have prevented more than 200 fraudulent check attempts since 2014, saving nearly $277,000 in taxpayer funds. (Nearly 30 have been in 2026 alone.) • Prioritized public awareness of StateSpending.Nebraska.gov, especially via social media posts highlighting state spending and revenue sources.  (The Treasurer’s office is required by statute to maintain this site.)

Spellerberg as met more than 20 other state treasurers to gather ideas and best practices. Get details on the services at treasurer.nebraska.gov
