MCC Volleyball sweeps past North Platte

NORTH PLATTE – The McCook Community College volleyball team got back on the winning track Wednesday night with a sweep over North Platte Community College on the road. After trailing 18-13 in the opening set, MCC came back to win 26-24 then closed out the match with consecutive 25-19 set wins.
“The first set they really struggled with consistency, but after a time out and we kind of talked about it, I felt like they regained themselves relatively quickly,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
Wednesday’s win snaps a two-game losing skid on the road in Region IX south play.
“I thought the girls did really well of working on trying to get back to consistency and they’re playing together,” said Kobza.
Sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) led the offensive attack with 12 kills and tied for team-high in digs with eight and added two block assists.
Paulina Fister (sophomore, Tuszyn, Poland) was credited with seven kills, two service aces and seven digs. Shana Muller (freshman, Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had three kills, three block assists and four digs.
Freshman middle Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had four kills, one solo block and three block assists. Leia Young (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) had two kills and three block assists.
Freshman Libby Cole (Grant) led MCC with 12 assists and had two digs. Landree McNair (freshman, Chase County) had five assists, three block assists, two kills and two kills. Zoe Mulholland (freshman, Lander, Wyo.) had eight assists and three digs.
Brooke Nelson (freshman, Berthoud, Colo.) had eight digs, two kills and two service aces. Freshman Peightan Swanson (Severance, Colo.) had one ace serve.
The Knights go to 1-4 in the Region IX South standings and 7-13 overall.
“I just never know as a coach how that game is going to go when we are matched up against North Platte. Rivalry matches do crazy things,” said Kobza. “It very easily could’ve gone the other way, but I do think our girls put up a good fight and they played really good volleyball.”
MCC improves to 4-2 in region play, good for fourth place in the standings and 8-12 for the season.
The Lady Indians travel to Lincoln Saturday for a match with Southeast Community College. The Bobcats are winless in four region matches and are 5-23 overall.
