MCC Volleyball loses final two games in Texas

GAINESVILLE, Texas – After winning twice Friday to open the North Central Texas College Tournament, the McCook Community College volleyball team dropped their final two matches Saturday losing to the host team, 3-1 and losing the finale to Wharton County Junior College 3-0.

“Today was rough,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “I didn’t think we would continue to downhill spiral, but we did.”

After winning the first six games of the season, the Lady Indians fall to 6-2.

“At the end of the day, we need to grow from this and learn how we beat ourselves, who we got beat, and fix it before next weekend,” said Kobza.

MCC will host the Labor Day Weekend Tournament starting with a Thursday match against Eastern Wyoming College at 6 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

On Friday MCC plays Northeast Community College (Norfolk) at noon followed with a 6 p.m. match against No. 13 Butler Community College (Kan.). MCC will play Northwestern at 11 a.m. Saturday followed by Iowa Western Community College at 1 p.m.

GAME 1 – North Central Texas 3, MCC 1: The Lady Indians came out slow in the first set and lost 14-25 but came back to even the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. The Lady Lions won the third set 25-21 and took the match, winning the final set 25-22.

Sophomore Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) had 11 kills and two assist blocks and freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) tied for team-high kills with 11 to go along with five assist blocks.

Freshman Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) was credited with nine kills, two assist blocks and two aces.

Sophomores Anna Richardson (Worland, Wyo.) contributed five kills, two assist blocks and a service while

Bobbi Starkebaum (sophomore, Haxtun, Colo.) had six assist blocks to go along with three kills.

GAME 2 – WCJC 3, McCook CC 0: The Lions took the set 25-10, 25-17 and 25-21 to sweep the Lady Indians. This was the first team to sweep the Lady Indians this season.

Wharton also swept their first match Saturday against Western Texas College to improve to 5-0 on the year.
