MCC Volleyball goes 0-4 in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas – The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped two more matches Saturday in the Amarillo College Volleyball Tournament to finish the weekend 0-4. MCC lost a 3-0 match to Midland College and a 3-1 match to Western Texas College.

“We continue to see good things, but unfortunately our consistency in those things are where the struggles take place,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. 

Two weeks ago, MCC beat Western Texas 3-2 in the tournament in Gainesville, Texas.

The Lady Indians fall to 7-10. Midland College Chaparrals improves to 8-3, and Western Texas College goes to 4-11.

“We played some good teams and did some switching around of players this weekend,” said Kobza. “So hopefully this week we can perfect what we need to before we head into conference play.”

This tournament completed the non-conference portion of the 2026 schedule. All remaining games will be games against Region IX opponents starting with three straight road games.

The Lady Indians will open conference play in Colorado Friday with a 7 p.m. match with Trinidad State and a Saturday afternoon game at La Junta against Otero College. On Sept. 22 MCC plays at North Platte with the first home Region IX games Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 against Lamar (6 p.m.) and Southeast Community College (1 p.m.)

GAME 1 – Midland College 3, McCook CC 0: The Chaparrals swept the Lady Indians 25-15, 25-20, and 25-16.

Freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) had a team-high nine kills and was one of three Lady Indians with three assist blocks. Leia Young (sophomore, Amarillo, Texas) had five kills, three assist blocks and one solo block.

Maggie Fiene (freshman, Conestoga High School) was credited with four kills and three assist blocks. Bobbi Starkebaum (sophomore, Haxtun, Colo.) had one kill with three assist blocks. Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France), freshman Avery Jensen (St. Francis, Kan.) and freshman Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) all had two kills while Anna Richardson (sophomore, Worland, Wyo.) had one.

In the passing game, sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) had 14 set assists and freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) had five.

GAME 2 – Western Texas 3, McCook CC 1: The Westerners won 25-20, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-17.

Relebohile Phamotse led MCC in the attack against the Westerners with 15 killd along with two block assists. Shana Muller was credited with 11 kills, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Avery Jensen had six kills and four assist blocks.

Leia Young chipped in five kills, one assist block and a service ace. Bobbi Starkebaum had four assist blocks and a kill. Maggie Fiene had one kill and Jade Powell had one assist block.

Zoe Mulholland had 19 assists, Cheyanne Ortiz had 17 assists and led MCC from the service line with three aces. Anna Richardson had one ace.
