MCC Volleyball concludes season with win at Lamar
LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team wrapped up the season Thursday with a 3-1 win over Lamar Community College.
“I’m glad we went in and finished our season off with a win,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
MCC won 25-17, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-15.
However, the Lady Indians did not qualify for the post-season tournament and end the year 8-6 in the Region IX South standings – tied for fourth place with Trinidad State. The Trojans won the tie-breaker over MCC and joins Northeastern Junior College (14-0), Western Nebraska (11-3) and North Platte (9-5) in the post-season tournament.
The Lady Indians finish with an overall record of 12-16.
“Our sophomores played well tonight and I’m excited that they chose MCC to further their volleyball career,” said Kobza. “And our freshmen are excited to get to work this spring season and be the change for next year.”
Sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) closed out her MCC career with 16 kills to lead the attack along with eight digs and four service aces. Freshman Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) had nine kills, four solo blocks and three block assists. Peightan Swanson (freshman, Severance, Colo.) had six kills and two digs.
Bobbi Starkebaum (freshman, Haxtun, Colo.) had four kills and two blocks, sophomore Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) had four kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Audrey Holm (Paxton, Colo.) and freshman Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) both had three kills.
The Lady Indians had 15 service aces in the match and were led by Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) with five. She also had 20 assists, tied for team-high honors with freshman Landree McNair (Imperial) who added eight digs.
Freshman Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) had four aces and led the team with 15 digs.
Lamar closes out the year at 4-10 in Region IX South play and 4-21 overall.
