MCC golfers third at York Fall Invite
YORK – Five freshman golfers from McCook Community College placed third among the three teams competing in the two-day York University Fall Invitational at the York Country Club. The tourney concluded Tuesday with 36 holes.
Central Community College was first with a score 645 (+85 for the tournament). York was second at 648 and MCC third with a 671.
“No one really had their best stuff these last two days, which is frustrating after our best finish so far this season in McCook on Friday,” said MCC Coach Grant Case.
York’s Francisco Carvalho Gouveia took home individual honors with a three-round score of 223. His +13 score was six shots better than Luke Specht of Central.
After competing at Heritage Hills Thursday and Friday, five MCC freshmen ended up playing 90 holes over six days with the Tuesday’s finale a 36-hole day.
“This was still a great experience for our five freshman getting to play 36 holes in one day and how to deal with the physical and mental fatigue that sets in,” said Case. “That will only benefit them when it comes time for the district tournament in the spring.”
Joackym Mahy (Andenne, Belgium) posted MCC’s low score for the tournament with a final round 73 pushing him to fourth among individuals. He was +30 for his three rounds and posted a 240. Jeb Kastens (Atwood, Kan.) placed fifth with a 241. He had rounds of 79, 85 and 77.
Louis Yin (Tainan, Taiwan) was two-shots back of Mahy for sixth place with a 252. After shooting an 88 Monday, he came back with back-to-back rounds of 77 over 36 holes Tuesday.
Jalen Collicott (McCook) finished with a 263 and tied for 12th place. Braiden Portie (Arvada, Colo.) finished the tournament with a 264.
MCC will wrap up the fall schedule Oct. 6-7 at the Nebraska Intercollegiate at Fremont.
“We’ll be looking to clean up our mistakes this week before headed to Fremont, which is a very similar style of golf course compared to what we just saw at the York Country Club,” said Case.
