MCC golfers open season with fourth-place finish

McCook Community College Golf
TORRINGTON, WYO. – A young McCook Community College golf team opened the season with a fourth-place finish in the two-day Eastern Wyoming Tournament. The host school claimed the team title with a six-under par 570 to win the event by 10 strokes over Lamar at Cottonwood Golf Course.

After Thursday’s opening-round MCC was tied for fifth place with Otero, both teams were 23-over par with rounds of 311. On Friday, MCC shot a 302 and leapfrogged over Otero and picked up six shots on Northeastern Junior College to finish in a fourth-place tie with NJC.

MCC suited up four freshmen and a sophomore for the tournament.

“Lots of freshmen getting their first taste of college golf this week,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “All-in-all, I’m pretty happy with everyone’s efforts this week.”

Freshman Freddie Wilson (Basingstoke, England) carded MCC’s low score after Thursday’s round with a four-over par 76 which put him in a tie for 11th place, just one shot out of the Top 10. He came back with a 73 on Friday to finish in 14th place with a five-over par 149.

“Freddie’s 73 today really stands out,” said Case. “I’m excited to see what he can continue to do as the season progresses.”

After being seven-over par on Thursday, sophomore Louis Yin (Tainan, Taiwan) shot a two-over 74 to finish with a two-day 153 – nine over for the trip.

The other three freshmen seeing their first collegiate golf action were Manus Crichton-Coote (Bexhill-On-Sea, England) who had rounds of 77 and 78 to finish at 11-over; William Clayton (West Malling, England) carded rounds of 79 and 77 to finish at 12-over; and Trenton Raile (McCook) had rounds of 79 and 78 to finish at 13-over.

The Indians will have a week off before participating in the North Platte Community College Tournament Sept. 10-11 at Rivers Edge Golf Course.

“This week off will be very beneficial for us to get more qualifying in, continue to tidy things up, and be prepared for North Platte in a few weeks,” said Case.

MCC will host the Region IX field at Heritage Hills Golf Course on Sept. 24-25.
