MCC golfers fifth at Riverton tournament

RIVERTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College golf team started the day Friday battling for third place in the Central Wyoming Tournament but had a tough day and finished fifth among the five Region IX teams competing in the two-day tournament.
Eastern Wyoming claimed the team title with a +12 score. Central Wyoming was 12 shots back of second place Lamar to start the day but charged back hard Friday but finished the day one stroke behind the Lopes. Lamar was 25 shots back of Eastern Wyoming.
MCC and Central Wyoming were tied at 317 after Thursday’s round with Northeastern Junior College two shots back at 319, but the Rustlers posted a 297 Friday yet couldn’t overcome Lamar for second place. The Lopes had rounds of 305 and 308 to finish second.
After shooting that 317 Thursday, the Indians shot a 327 Friday.
“Everyone feels like the play was quite a bit better than last week even though the scores may not have shown it,” said MCC Coach Grant Case.
A pair of freshmen tied for MCC’s best two-day showing. Jeb Kastens (Atwood, Kan.) and Louis Yin (Tainan, Taiwan) tied for 14th place with scores of 156, which was 12-over-par. Kastens had the low round for MCC at Riverton with a first-round 75 and followed that with an 81 Friday. Yin had rounds of 77 and 79.
Joackym Mahy (freshman Andenne, Belgium) had rounds of 79 and 82 to finish at 161. Sophomore Cole Graham (McCook) had rounds of 86 and 86 for a two-day 172.
Freshman Braiden Portie (Arvada, Colo.) had rounds of 88 and 85 to finish at 173 and freshman Jalen Collicott (McCook) had rounds of 89 and 96 and finished with a score of 185.
“There were a lot of things we did good this week but there are still plenty of things to clean up this next week at practice before our event in North Platte next week,” said Case.
The team will return to the links next week at Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte for the two-day North Platte tournament Thursday and Friday.
