Lady Indians top Bobcats Saturday at home
The McCook Community College women’s basketball team broke open a tight game after the third quarter Saturday to swarm Southeast Community College over the final 10 minutes on the way to a 59-47 win at home.
MCC came back from a 15-9 first-quarter deficit to lead at halftime 28-24. Southeast held a 14-13 third-quarter edge and cut MCC’s lead to 41-38. The Lady Indians outscored SCC 18-9 in the fourth quarter.
“We had big second and fourth quarters to finish halves and we made some plays on the defensive end,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.
The Lady Indians are coming off a 52-45 loss Wednesday at home against Lamar.
“I’m proud of this group coming off that tough loss to Lamar,” said Pritchett. “We played hard and did our jobs tonight.”
Shooting statistics were not available for post-game.
The Lady Indians made 11 of 17 free throws (58.3 percent) for the game.
Pritchett was disappointed in the showing at the line but in also the MCC offense in general.
“We have to be able to make shots and do a better job attacking the rim and that led to too many empty possessions,” said Pritchett. “This is a group that’s capable of scoring in the 70s every night and I have to figure out how I can help them so we can score better,” said Pritchett.
Freshman Claudia Serrador Cortazar (freshman, Trapagaran, Spain) led MCC with 14 points Saturday to go with four rebounds. Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) had 12 points while Mar Molina Munoz (freshman, Parets del Valles, Spain) pitched in 11 points, and was five-for-seven from the line with three steals.
Freshman Nevaeh Lucero (Thornton, Colo.) and Peyton Cox (Wauneta-Palisade) both had six points off the bench. Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) led MCC with six rebounds. Stephanie Nnabuihe (freshman, Newbridge, Ireland) had five boards
“We continue to do a good job defensively holding their leading scorer (Makayla Lemelle) to 10 points – she’s been averaging 16, and we kept everybody else in check,” said Pritchett.
The Bobcats fall to 2-6 in Region IX South play and 4-18 overall.
MCC goes to 7-2 and remains tied for first place in the standings and 14-11 overall.
“We have to get back Monday and Tuesday and figure out how to get the ball in the basket better,” said Pritchett.
The Lady Indians have just one game this week and they will be on the road to North Platte Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Knights are 3-6 in the standings and 6-17 for the season.
“North Platte is historically a tough place to play for us and we need to be ready for an exciting atmosphere up there,” said Pritchett.
