Lady Indians take Lamar series with Tuesday split

The McCook Community College softball team wrapped up its series against Lamar Community College Tuesday, splitting two games but taking the series 3-1.

Lamar won the first game 9-6 but MCC came back to take the second game 11-2 in five innings.

“We got out played in Game 1,” said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. “I didn’t feel the energy during Game 1 like we had Game 2.”

Freshman Sadie Kahl (Calgary, Alberta) picked up the win from the pitching circle in Game 2, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Sophomore Andie Suhai (Medicine Hat, Alberta) hit home runs in both games, her 12 and 13th of the season. MCC scored seven runs in the first inning of Game 2.

“In Game 2 Sadie shut them down and we never looked back,” said Mendenhall.

Lamar goes to 6-14 in Region IX and 13-19 overall.

MCC goes to 28-8, and 10-6 in the region.

“It’s always nice to win a series,” said Mendenhall. “Yes, we wanted to sweep them, but it is hard to beat a team four times.”

The Lady Indians will continue the homestand Wednesday with two games against Central Community College starting at 2 p.m. This will be MCC's first games in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference schedule. The Raiders are 16-11 on the season and 0-2 in the NCCAC, having lost two games to Southeast Community College.

GAME 1 – Lamar 9, McCook CC 6:

Laila Gutierrez (freshman, Seminole, Texas) led off the first with a walk, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch to put MCC up 1-0.

Lamar scored three runs in the second and added one in the third and fourth to lead 5-1.

Two Runnin’ Lopes errors in the MCC fourth led to two unearned runs as the Lady Indians closed the gap to 5-3.

Lamar responded with two in the fifth to go up 7-3 but Andie Suhai hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to make it a 7-4 game.

Ella Covill-Marter doubled to lead off the sixth. After an error and a bunt-single by Gutierrez loaded the bases, Covill-Marter scored on a sacrifice fly by Suhai.

“We kept hanging around and had opportunities to score but couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it,” said Mendenhall.

LCC scored two in the seventh to go up 9-5.

Three of MCC’s first four hitters in the seventh singled, but the Indians scored just one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rocio Mascorro (Brownsville, Texas).

Covill-Marter pitched six innings for MCC, allowing nine hits, four walks and seven earned runs. Freshman Lexi Knapp (Berthoud, Colo.) pitched one inning, allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

MCC had three hits led by three from Covill-Marter and two by Gutierrez.
