Lady Indians sweep Tigers in Sunday games


The McCook Community College softball team scored in every inning of their Sunday doubleheader against Fort Hays Tech Northwest and rolled to two more wins. The Lady Indians won 15-1 and 11-0 with both games limited to five innings with the run rule.

Sophomore pitcher Olivia Moorhead (Hershey, Neb.) didn't allow an earned run in Game 1 and picked up her second complete game of the year as MCC outhit the Tigers 12-4.

"We played very well today Olivia did a great job in the circle and gave up minimal free passes," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. "It was nice to get a lot of girls in today and get some quality reps."

Brooklyn Gillen (freshman, McCook) had two triples and three hits in Game 2 as three pitches combined for the shutout.

Fort Hays Tech Northwest falls to 1-39 on the season.

The Lady Indians improve to 37-5 and go to 18-0 at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

MCC will host Colby Community College Monday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

This weekend MCC will hit the road for Region IX play, traveling to Las Vegas, N.M. for a four-game set against Luna Community College. MCC leads the Region IX standings at 19-1. Luna is fourth in the standings at 11-7 (18-24 overall).

GAME 1 – McCook CC 15, Fort Hays Tech NW 1 (5 innings): MCC scored five runs in the first. Sophomore Paige Warren (Victoria, British Columbia) led off with a triple and scored on an RBI-double from sophomore Marleigh Mitchell (Mission, British Columbia). The Lady Indians also got RBI-hits by Kashlin Beck (sophomore, Claflin, Kan.), freshman Hallie Schneider (Alliance, Neb.) and sophomore Olivia Pollon (Tisdale, Saskatchewan).

The home team added to the 5-0 lead with three runs in the second inning. Warren, freshman Blake Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) and Mitchell led off the frame with back-to-back-to-back doubles and Schneider drove in Mitchell on a fielder's choice to put the Lady Indians ahead 8-0.

Freshman MHS grad Malia Hilker singled to lead off a six-run third inning and later came home on an error. MCC got runs on a bases-loaded walk by Beck, a two-run single by sophomore pinch-hitter Tatum Ross (Frederick, Colo.), an RBI-single from Pollon and a sacrifice fly to make it a 14-0 game.

After the Tigers scored an unearned run in the fourth, MCC added a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Ross.

Olivia Moorhead pitched a complete game and improved to 3-0 with the win in the pitcher's circle. She allowed four hits, one walk, no earned runs and she struck out three.

MCC had 12 hits in the game with two-hit games by Warren, Mitchell, Beck, Ross and Pollon. Mitchell and Ross both had three RBIs, Beck Schneider and Pollon all had two RBIs.

GAME 2 – McCook CC 11, Fort Hays Tech NW 0 (5 innings): Brooklyn Gillen led off the first with a single and scored on a double from Ellie Baca (freshman, Greeley, Colo.). Baca put MCC up 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Blake Elliott.

Freshman Hannah Schneider (Alliance, Neb.) pitched the first two innings for MCC, allowing two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Freshman Lyndsay Keogh (Surrey, British Columbia) put MCC up 3-0 with an RBI-groundout in the second inning. With two outs freshman Hayley Smith (Chestermere, Alberta) doubled in two runs and Malia Hilker tripled home Smith to give the Lady Indians a 6-0 edge.

Hallie Schneider relieved her twin sister in the pitcher's circle in the third inning and and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and she struck out three.

Gillen tripled with two outs in the third to drive in a run, Keogh singled in a run and a Tiger error allowed another run to put MCC up 9-0.

Elliott doubled to lead off the fourth and scored on an error and Gillen tripled in the final MCC run for an 11-0 lead.

Smith pitched a scoreless fifth inning, allowing one walk.

Gillen led the MCC offense with three hits including a pair of triples. She and Smith both had two RBIs.
