Lady Indians sweep Bobcats; move into third place

LINCOLN – The McCook Community College volleyball team handed Southeast Community College their ninth straight loss Saturday and moved into third place in the Region IX South standings.
MCC downed the Bobcats 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15.
“The girls played well today and their serves were tough,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
The Lady Indians served at an 87.7 rate Saturday and pegged nine service aces split among seven players. Freshman Peightan Swanson (Severance, Colo.) led the team with three along with three kills and four digs.
Ten of the 12 Lady Indians who saw the court had at least one kill. Sophomore Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) led the way with eight kills to go along with four digs.
Three players each had five kills including sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.), Anna Richardson (freshman, Worland, Wyo.) and Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France). Russick added five assists and four digs. Richardson had two digs and Muller added two block assists.
Freshman Stefany Garcia (Cochabamba, Bolivia) had three kills and two digs. Sophomore Audrey Holm (Paxton, Colo.) added two kills.
“We were able to play everyone, and everyone did what they were supposed to do,” said Kobza.
Freshman Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) led MCC with 15 digs and added 17 assists.
Zoe Mulholland (freshman Lander, Wyo.) led MCC with 37 assists and had two digs. Landree McNair (Chase County High School) chipped in 34 assists, seven digs, two kills and a block assist.
Freshman Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) led the middle with four solo blocks, four block assists, four kills and added two digs. Bobbi Starkebaum (freshman, Haxtun, Colo.) had two assist blocks, one solo block, two digs and two kills.
The Bobcats are winless in region play at 0-6 and fall to 6-24 on the year.
The Lady Indians move into third place in the Region IX South Standings with a 5-2 mark, behind No. 5 Northeastern Junior College (7-0) and Western Nebraska (6-1). MCC is 9-12 overall.
Saturday’s match in Lincoln marked the halfway mark of the regional schedule. The Lady Indians head to Colorado for a pair of weekend games to begin the second half of the Region IX slate with a Friday match at Trinidad State and Saturday at La, Junta against Otero College.
“We have a big week next week so, we are ready to get in the gym for practice,” said Kobza.
MCC will return to the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center for a couple key regional matchups Oct. 14 against second place Western Nebraska at 6 p.m. and an Oct. 16 date against first-place NJC (6 p.m.)
