LA JUNTA, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team salvaged a weekend split in Colorado taking a 3-1 win Saturday over Otero College.

After being swept by Trinidad State on Friday, the Lady Indians beat Otero Saturday 25-21, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-19.

“We got a little complacent in the third set, but thank goodness we came out to take charge late in the fourth set,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

After compiling sideout percentages of 68 percent in the first set and 75 percent in the second set, MCC fell to 56 percent in the third set before closing out the fourth set at 73 percent.

Sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) led the MCC attack with 15 kills and added seven digs, one assist assist block and one service ace. Leia Young (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) was credited with 10 kills and one block assist.

Shana Muller (freshman Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had seven kills while freshman Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had six kills and four block assists.

Chase County freshman Landree McNair had five kills, nine digs, a team-high 26 assists and four block assists. Sophomore Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) had a team-best four service aces to go along with five kills and nine digs.

Freshman Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) had 12 assists and 10 digs, and freshman Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) had a team-best 14 digs

Otero falls to 1-8 in the region and 3-18 overall.

MCC improves to 6-3 in the region standings and 10-13 overall.

“We have a big week ahead and need to fine tune some things so we can compete,” said Kobza.

This week the Lady Indians have a couple key home region matches with the Region IX South’s top two teams visiting the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. On Tuesday MCC hosts second place Western Nebraska (7-2, 9-18) at 6 p.m. Then Thursday, first-place Northeastern Junior College (9-0, 23-3) comes to McCook for a 6 p.m. match. The Plainswomen are ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA D1 polls this week.
