TORRINGTON, Wyo. – After giving up a 19-point lead Friday night, the McCook Community College women’s basketball team responded Saturday afternoon with a 72-62 win over Eastern Wyoming CC.
“We had another good start to the game today and this time we continued that for four quarters,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “This was the first game this year we either outscored or tied our opponent in every quarter.”
The Lady Indians had the lead for 34:29 of the 40 minutes in the game, jumping to a 15-9 first quarter lead, held a 17-16 edge in the second period and went up 32-25 at the half. Both teams scored 19 points in the third and MCC closed out the win with a 21-18 advantage in the final stanza.
“It was a balanced night with nine players scoring,” said Prithett. “We continue to improve, and I like how we responded to a disappointing night last night.”
MCC held a 36-24 advantage in the paint with the Lady Indian bench outscoring the Lancers 34-29.
The Lady Indians finished the game shooting 47.4 percent from the field, made seven 3-pointers on 21 attempts (33.3 percent) and made 11 of 20 free throws (55 percent). MCC turned the ball over 25 times and was credited with 18 assists and 13 steals in the game.
“We played much better as a team today,” said Pritchett. “Those 18 assists shows how we moved the ball and found open teammates.”
From the field, EWC shot 35.2 percent, making six of 25 triples and 18 of 24 free throws. The Lancers out-rebounded MCC 35-33 and turned the ball over 29 times.
Sophomore Nevaeh Lucero (Thornton, Colo.) led a trio of Lady Indians in double figures with 13 points which included a pair of 3-pointers, four rebounds and four assists.
“Nevaeh shot the ball well tonight for us, she continues to find ways to create and just plays with such poise,” said Pritchett.
Freshman Brooklyn Gurbiel-Karemaker (Chidlow, Australia) and sophomore Miah Wren (Rangely, Colo.) both scored 12 points off the bench. Gurbiel-Karemaker led MCC with six steals, hit a 3-pointer and went three-for-four from the line. Wren hit a pair of triples.
“Brooklyn came off the bench and gave us a great lift,” said Pritchett. “I felt Claudia played great tonight, it doesn't show on the stats, but she just competed.”
Claudia Serrador Cortazar (Trapagaran, Spain) had four points and four rebounds in her 17:30 on the court.
Sophomore Mar Molina Munoz (Parets del Valles, Spain) scored seven points and led MCC with eight rebounds from her guard spot. Freshman Iraia Aduriz Marquez (Barcelona, Spain) chipped in eight points and freshman Paula Sanchez Rodriguez (Sevilla, Spain) scored eight points off the bench.
EWC falls to 2-3 on the year.
MCC improves to 2-2.
Next up for the Lady Indians will be in Big Springs, Texas for the Howard Classic Friday and Saturday, taking on the hosts Friday at 6 p.m. and Western Texas College Nov. 14 at noon.
“We still need to really clean up the turnover situation before we head to Texas next week,” said Pritchett.
