Lady Indians nip Trinidad in five sets

“I’m glad we came out on top, but that last set could have gone either way,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “Trinidad has two great outsides and we really struggled to get them stopped.” 

MCC won 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25 and pulled out the fifth set 19-17. There were 11 ties in the fifth set and five lead changes.

“I do think we finally have our game plan, but now we just need to learn consistency,” said Kobza.

Relebohile Phamotse (freshman, Maseru, Lesotho) had 20 kills to lead the Lady Indians along with two solo blocks and four service aces. Freshman Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) had 10 kills and eight digs.

Sophomores Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) and Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) both had seven kills Young had three solo blocks and Muller had two assist blocks.

Sophomore Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) was credited with two kills, two solo blocks and three assist blocks.

Zoe Mulholland (sophomore, Lander, Wyo.) led the passing game with 25 assists and freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) had 16 with nine digs and two service aces. MCC had 10 aces in the match.

Sophomore Anna Richardson (Worland, Wyo.) led MCC with 12 digs.

The Trojans fall to 5-12.

MCC improves to 8-10 and continues the conference-opening Colorado road trip Saturday at La Junta with a 2 p.m. game against Otero College (3-8).

On Tuesday, MCC will be in North Platte to take on the Knights in a 6 p.m. match and then return home next weekend for a Friday match (6 p.m.) against Lamar and a Saturday 1 p.m. matinee against Southeast Community College.
