The McCook Community College women’s basketball team fell to Laramie County Community College at home Saturday 65-59.

“It was the tale of two halves and a tale of two different games to start our season,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “We were down Friday at half and came out with a great third quarter and today we were up at half and LCCC had a really good third quarter.”

MCC led 35-30 Saturday but was outscored 19-14 in the third period and 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

“We had six turnovers in the first half and 10 the second half and they were unforced turnovers – misreading the defense, not making smart passes and we have to correct that,” said Pritchett. “Everything was on us today, Laramie kept fighting and made shots.”

After getting to the free-throw line 14 times in the first half, MCC shot just two in the second half. LCCC shot four free throws in the first and 16 in the second half.

The Golden Eagles shot 45.5 percent from the field in the second half and 41.7 percent for the game. They made nine of 22 shots from the 3-point line and finished the game making 16 of 20 free throws (80 percent).

“It’s tough when team’s are making shots and we’re not guarding as well as we should, but we’ll go back and watch some film and fix some things,” said Pritchett.

MCC shot 35 percent from the field, made six of 17 3-point shots (35.3 percent) and was 11 of 16 from the line (68.8 percent). The Lady Indians turned the ball over 16 times and were out-rebounded 31-28.

Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (freshman, Islas Canarias, Spain) led MCC with 18 points including a four-for-six day shooting the three. Sophomore Miriam Wahlqvist (Helsingborg, Sweden) scored eight points and led the Lady Indians with eight rebounds. Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) scored eight points and led the team with five assists.

MCC goes to 1-1 on the season and will be home again Tuesday to face 2-0 Garden City Community College at 6 p.m.

That’s a tough team coming up,” said Pritchett. “They can really score and we’ll have to defend at a high level and not make so many mistakes.

The Broncbusters opened the season with a 108-37 win at Trinidad State and topped Otero on the road 74-65.
