Lady Indians drop three to start season

NORTH PLATTE – The McCook Community College volleyball team0 lost a pair of matches Saturday in the North Platte Community College tournament to fall to 0-3 on the season.

MCC lost 3-1 to Seward County Community College and dropped a straight-set match to Gillette Community College 3-0.

“This was a tough day,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “We only have one way to move and that’s forward.”

MCC will try to get on the winning track with four matches at home this week in the MCC Labor Day Weekend Tournament. The three-day, tourney starts Thursday with a 6 p.m. match with No. 7 Indian Hills Community College (Iowa).

On Friday MCC plays two Kansas schools starting with Hutchinson Community College at noon and a 6 p.m. match with Cloud County Community College. On Saturday the lone match will be at 1 p.m. against Amarillo Community College of Texas.

“When you lose, you learn, so we have to be ready to go back to practice on Monday,” said Kobza.

Seward County CC 3, McCook CC 1: The Saints won 25-18, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-20.

Sophomore transfer Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) led MCC with 12 kills and had one solo block and one assist.

Brooke Nelson (freshman, Berthoud, Colo.) led MCC with 10 digs and had two assists. Landree McNair (freshman, Imperial) had 24 assists and three assist blocks.

Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had four kills, two assist blocks and one solo block. Freshman Stefany Garcia (Cochabamba, Bolivia) had three kills and three assist blocks.

Sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) was credited with three kills and two assist blocks while Anna Richardson (freshman, Worland, Wyo.) added two kills.

Gillette College 3, McCook CC 0: The Pronghorns took the match 25-16, 25-23 and 25-21.

Russick led the attack with 10 kills and had two assist blocks. Fister had nine kills and an assist block.

Starkebaum had five kills and an assist block. Freshman Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) was credited with three assist blocks and two kills and Richardson had three kills with one service ace.

Freshman Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) led MCC with 24 assists and had one ace.

Sophomore Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) had one assist block.
