Indians drop 12-2 game at Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The McCook Community College baseball team lost a 12-2 non-conference game Tuesday on the road against Garden City Community College.
The Broncbusters scored runs in five of the six innings they batted, including a six-run third inning. MCC was held to three hits in the game and six Indian pitchers issued 13 free passes in the seven-inning game.
“Another big inning put us behind the 8-ball,” said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. ‘We can’t allow those to happen but we’re going to have to have someone step up and shut them down, free passes didn’t help either.”
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, MCC tied the game on a leadoff single by Nathan Hutchison (sophomore, Riverton, Wyo.) who went to second on a passed ball, advance to third on a single from Dalton Berg (freshman, Frederick, Colo.), and scored on an RBI-groundout from Carter Smith (Ottawa, Canada). The Indians’ other run came in the sixth on an RBI-single by sophomore Cory Wouters (Saskatchewan).
Six freshman pitchers shared the mound for the Indians Tuesday. Kaden Noble (Orillia, Ontario) drew the start and went two innings allowing one earned run on a hit, a walk and a strikeout. Landen Zehr (Kitchener, Ontario) pitched to six batters in the third, retiring one hitter and was charged with five earned runs allowing a hit and four walks. Parker Wilson (Tulsa, Okla.) pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Colby Kaplan (Parker, Colo.) pitched the fourth and struck out three hitters and walked one. Kayden Frizzell (Littleton, Colo.) pitched one-third of an inning but walked three and allowed two earned runs before Julian Alvarez (Vaughan, Ontario) came on in relief. Alvarez pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing no earned runs, no hits, one walk and he struck out two.
Garden City improves to 14-12 while MCC falls to 11-15.
Projected inclement weather projected for this weekend in Scottsbluff has changed the second part of MCC’s split home-and-home series against Western Nebraska.
The four-game series will begin as scheduled Thursday at the Jaycees Sports Complex. That doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. The doubleheader in Scottsbluff was moved up a day because of the weather and will now be played Friday at 2 p.m.
“We need to find the switch to get it going against Western Thursday, hopefully playing at home will help,” said Olsen.
The Cougars are 0-4 in the Empire League (Region IX) and 9-16 overall. The Indians are 1-3 in the Empire League standings.
