Huskers Fall to No. 3 Alabama on Saturday

The No. 1 Nebraska softball team suffered its first loss since March, a 5-1 defeat to the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday at the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Nebraska fell to 52-7 on the season and the loss snapped a 27-game win streak, which was the longest in the country and in program history.
Hannah Camenzind was responsible for the Huskers’ only hit of the day, a solo shot to center field in the fourth inning.
Jordy Frahm (21-5) took the loss in the circle, as she allowed three runs on three hits in two innings. Alexis Jensen threw the final four innings for the Big Red, striking out six and allowing only two hits and two unearned runs.
Alabama knocked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to open the scoring and take a 3-0 lead. The Crimson Tide added another run in the bottom of the third.
NU scored its first run of the day on its first hit of the day, a H. Camenzind solo homer in the top of the fourth, to make the score 4-1.
Alabama extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
Nebraska will face the No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns in an elimination game tomorrow, May 31, at 2 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised on ABC and can be heard across the Huskers Radio Network or on B107.3 FM.

The loss snapped Nebraska’s 27-game winning streak, which was the longest in program history and the longest active streak in the country.

The Huskers fell to 9-15 all-time at the Women’s College World Series and 75-59 in the NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska pitchers struck out nine batters in the game. That increased the Huskers’ season total to 504, a new school record, eclipsing the 502 strikeouts during the 2001 season.

Alabama scored five runs in the first four innings despite hitting only three balls out of the infield (three-run homer, sacrifice fly and RBI single).

Four of Alabama’s five runs scored with two outs. Four of the Crimson Tide’s five hits also came with two outs.

Nebraska was held to a season-low one hit and a season-low-tying one run.

In her Women’s College World Series debut, freshman Alexis Jensen did not allow an earned run and struck out six in 4.0 innings of relief.

The attendance was 12,679, a session four attendance record at the Women’s College World Series.
