Huskers Drop Close Battle to Washington

The No. 10 Nebraska softball team tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth but allowed a Washington run in the bottom of the seventh and fell to the Huskies, 3-2, on Sunday morning in San Antonio, Texas.
 
With the loss, the Huskers moved to 3-2 on the season while UW improved to 2-2. NU split series with No. 1 Texas and Washington on the weekend and grabbed a victory over host UTSA. 
 
Washington outhit NU, 10-7, while the Huskers’ lone error in the first inning, which allowed the Huskies to take the lead, proved to be costly. 
 
Morgan Reimer (1-1) claimed the win in the circle for UW, while Jordy Frahm (1-2) took the loss. Frahm threw a complete game and allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out 10. 
 
Kacie Hoffmann went 2-for-3 with a double, while Hannah Camenzind hit a solo home run. Jesse Farrell also added a double and Frahm, Emmerson Cope and Lauren Camenzind registered a hit apiece to account for the rest of the NU offense.
 
Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Husker error in the bottom of the first.
 
NU tied it up in the top of the second with a H. Camenzind solo shot, her second of the weekend.
 
The Huskies took a 2-1 lead with a home run in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Farrell opened the top of the sixth with a double and scored on a Hoffmann double to left field to tie the score at 2-2. 
 
Ava Caroll singled for UW in the bottom of the seventh and went to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. She scored off a Jadyn Glab single to clinch the win for the Huskies. 
 
The Huskers will travel to Clearwater, Fla., for the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational next weekend. NU will open the tournament at 9 a.m. (CT) against No. 16 LSU on Thursday, Feb. 12. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and can be heard across the Huskers Radio Network.
 
Notes
  • Bella Bacon, who played in 53 of the Huskers’ 58 games last year, made her first start and appearance of the season today.
  • Nebraska totaled 12 home runs on the weekend.
  • Jordy Frahm surpassed 700 career strikeouts, as she entered today with 696 and notched 101 to total 706. 
  • Frahm’s 10 Ks today marked her first double-digit strikeout effort of the season.
