Husker Football Fights Past Hawks, 34-7

Lincoln - Jamal Rule produced his second 100-yard rushing game of the young season and scored a pair of touchdowns to power Nebraska's 34-7 win over North Dakota Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Cornhuskers closed non-conference play with a 3-0 record, while FCS No. 6 North Dakota slipped to 3-1 with its first setback of the season.

Rule, a freshman running back from Salisbury, N.C., crossed the century mark on Nebraska's first offensive play of the second half, an explosive 55-yard touchdown run to push Nebraska's lead to 24-0 just over one minute into the second half.

Through three games, Rule has rushed for 329 yards on just 38 carries with five touchdowns for an average of 8.7 yards per carry.

Rule led a Nebraska ground game that rolled for 277 yards, including nine carries for 55 yards for Mekhi Nelson and 40 yards on 10 carries for Isaiah Mozee. Kwinten Ives added 30 yards on his lone carry in the fourth quarter, while quarterback Anthony Colandrea contributed 19 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Colandrea added another efficient night through the air, completing 15-of-21 passes for 195 yards, including a five-yard touchdown strike to Quinn Clark on the first play of the fourth quarter to push Nebraska's lead to 31-7.

TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin both both saw time at quarterback for the Huskers in the fourth quarter, as the Big Red finished the night with 216 passing yards, including receptions by 11 Husker receivers. Overall, Nebraska totaled 493 yards while holding the Fighting Hawks to 205 total yards, including 106 passing and 99 rushing. 

Nebraska's defense pitched a first-half shutout while the offense put up 17 points, as the Huskers worked their way to a 17-0 halftime lead.

The Huskers dominated the half statistically, putting up 269 total yards on 41 plays, including 134 rushing and 135 passing.

The Blackshirts held the Fighting Hawks to just 68 yards on 21 plays, including just 21 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Colandrea got the offense off to a fast start, leading the Huskers on a 10-play, 75-yard march on the game's opening drive, capped by his 10-yard touchdown run to give the Big Red a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

After the Blackshirts notched their first stop, Colandrea went back to work, orchestrating an 11-play, 90-yard drive capped by Rule's three-yard touchdown blast.

The Huskers took their 14-0 lead to the second quarter, after Colandrea completed 5-of-6 passes for 53 yards and ran twice for 13 yards in the opening period. Rule rushed seven times for 46 yards and a score in the first quarter, while Nelson added four carries for 44 yards.

Nebraska continued to move the ball in the second quarter, but the Huskers were strapped with poor field position throughout the period, managing just a 32-yard Kyle Cunanan field goal with 36 seconds left in the half to take a 17-0 halftime lead.

The Blackshirts slammed the door shut on North Dakota's opening drive of the second half with a quick three-and-out to set up Rule's 55-yard touchdown run on Nebraska's first offensive snap of the third quarter.

However, North Dakota found an answer with a 12-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with Jerry Kaminski's seven-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Goodloe with 5:49 left in the third quarter.

The Huskers carried their 24-7 lead to the fourth quarter and started the final period on the doorstep of the end zone. On the opening play of the quarter, Colandra threw a scoring strike to Clark in the back of the end zone to push Nebraska's margin to 31-7.

Cunanan closed the scoring on his second field goal, this time from 40 yards with just under two minutes left to wrap up a well-played game that featured no turnovers and just five total penalties in just two hours and 53 minutes.

Dwayne McDougle III led the Blackshirts with seven tackles, while linebacker Owen Chambliss added six stops including a half sack and a quarterback hurry.

The Blackshirts also produced five sacks on the night - their most since getting five sacks against Purdue in 2024.

Nebraska will hit the road for the first time next week by traveling to Michigan State. Kickoff against the Spartans is set for 4 p.m. (CT) with live television coverage by the Big Ten Network.
