Hastings College launches Hayes M. Fuhr Music Scholarship

Hastings College

(Hastings, Nebraska) – Hastings College announced the establishment of the Hayes M. Fuhr Music Scholarship, a premier $30,000 annual award renewable for four years, totaling $120,000 per recipient. The award honors Hayes M. Fuhr, one of the most influential figures in the institution’s rich musical history.

For its inaugural year, the competitive scholarship will focus exclusively on vocal performance. Five incoming vocalists enrolling in Fall 2027 will be selected to receive the top-tier award and lead the next chapter of the College’s choral tradition.

Fuhr devoted nearly five decades to directing the music program at Hastings College, building a tradition of artistic distinction and choral performance that resonated far beyond the campus. The new scholarship serves as an enduring tribute to his decades of leadership, mentorship and vision.

"Hayes Fuhr set the standard for musical excellence, leaving a legacy that still inspires our students and faculty today," said Dr. Wayne Riggs, vice president of academic affairs. "By launching this scholarship, we are ensuring that his passion for music education continues to open doors for exceptionally talented vocalists."

Eligibility & Application Details

The scholarship is open to current high school seniors who plan to enroll at Hastings College in fall 2027 and participate in vocal ensembles. Because only five scholarships will be awarded for the 2027-28 academic year, decisions are made on a rolling basis, and early application is strongly encouraged.

Initial application and audition materials must be submitted by Dec. 1, 2026. Scholarship renewal is dependent on active participation in Hastings College vocal ensembles each year.

High school seniors interested in applying can review audition requirements, submission guidelines and full eligibility criteria at hastings.edu/fuhrscholarship.
