Governor Pillen Announces Property Tax Hotline

LINCOLN, NE – Today, Governor Jim Pillen announced the launch of his Property Tax Hotline to give taxpayers a platform for sharing information about their increasing valuations and rising property tax bills.

For decades, the Nebraska Legislature has promised to fix the property tax crisis. Throughout his first term, Gov. Pillen has offered multiple solutions designed to balance the three primary sources of tax revenue in Nebraska (three-legged stool) and reduce the property tax burden.

The state has invested nearly $1.7 billion in property tax reductions through state funded tax credits, homestead exemptions, and by funding Nebraska community colleges. The state also placed budget limitations on local governments, but once again, lobbyists and special interest groups inserted loopholes. Ultimately, local spending and tax collections have not slowed down. Property taxpayers continue to feel the pain every year when valuations are reset by county assessors and levies are unchanged.

“Property taxes are so out of whack, you don’t even need to own property to feel the impact,” said Gov. Pillen. “Nebraskans have been calling on the Legislature to fix this problem for decades. It’s now time to work together and find the solution.

Some of our senators don’t believe this issue to be as urgent as their constituents do. My hope is that this website will be a catalyst for getting this important message across.”

Nebraskans who have experienced a large increase in their property valuation or taxes owed are encouraged to call the Governor’s Property Tax Hotline at 402-471-9554 or visit the website: www.propertytaxhotline.nebraska.gov.

“I appreciate Nebraskans who take the time to share their data and their stories,” said Gov. Pillen. “They need to have a voice in this critical discussion. We need to hear what they have to say.”
