Explore the parks with these events in October

Spend some time this fall in Nebraska’s state parks. While history and hiking are major themes during October park events, other types of events are scheduled, too.

Don’t forget a Nebraska Vehicle Park Entry Permit is required at Nebraska state parks. Get one at OutdoorNebraska.gov or at state park entrances.

Night Sky Viewing at Merritt Reservoir

View the night sky from Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, an International Dark Sky Park, on Oct. 3 in a free ranger-led viewing event.

From 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., rangers from the Niobrara National Scenic River and members of the Platte Valley Astronomical Observers will present a program and then guide guests through the wonders of the night sky, with several telescopes available.

Meet at Boardman Creek Campground and bring layers and blankets, if necessary. Also bring a red cover over a flashlight to protect your night vision.

Naturalist-Led Hike at Ponca on Oct. 10

Come to Ponca State Park for a naturalist-led hike on Oct. 10.

Meet at the West Shelter at 10 a.m. and enjoy the scenic views, native wildlife, and fellowship until 12:30 p.m. Along the way, naturalists will talk about the cultural and natural history of the park and the flora and fauna found in the area. The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a Dutch oven.

Space is limited. The cost is $15 (card only). Registration is required by calling the park office at 402-755-2284.

1897 Camp Thayer at Fort Hartsuff SHP

Come to Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park on Oct. 10 and explore Nebraska’s frontier military history leading up to the Spanish-American War with a reenactment of an 1897 Nebraska National Guard training camp.

Named after Col. John M. Thayer, a former governor, this living history day brings to life the daily routines, challenges, and triumphs of the National Guard soldiers in the 1890s.

Activities from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. include living history reenactments, weapons and drill demonstrations from 1 to 4 p.m. and buildings and gift shop open all day.

Admission is $5 for ages 13 and older and $1 for ages 3-12.

Candlelight Tour at Arbor Lodge

Step into the shadows of history with a spine-tingling guided evening tour through the grand halls and eerie corners of Arbor Lodge Mansion in Nebraska City this Halloween season. Guests are led by costumed guides through the dimly lit 52-room mansion, with only a candle to light the way.

Each room holds a story — some historical, some mysterious — as the tour blends real Nebraska history with just enough spooky folklore to give you goosebumps. Hear whispers of the past, creaking floorboards, and unexplained chills as you explore antique-filled parlors, shadowy staircases, and hidden passageways once walked by the Morton family.

Tours are at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and Oct. 23, and at 6:30 and 8:30 on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. The tour is appropriate for teenagers and adults.

Schramm offers volunteer opportunity

Schramm Park State Recreation Area is offering a volunteer opportunity to assist with land management efforts.

From 9-11 a.m. Oct. 20, join Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff on activities such as invasive species removal, seed collection, trail maintenance, brush piling, and tree planting.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and long pants, bring water, and outdoor work/garden gloves. Long sleeves also are recommended. All ages are welcome, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult.

Meet at the park shelter next to Pond A, where an introduction to the project will kick things off. Volunteers must sign a waiver upon arrival. Visit the calendar entry at Calendar.Outdoornebraska.gov to register.

Full Moon Hike at Ponca State Park

Join Ponca State Park naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise on Oct. 25.

Meet at the Riverfront Playground at 5:45 p.m. for a guided hike of approximately one hour along the beautiful, wooded trails. The hike will include some steep inclines and is considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks.

Handheld flashlights will be provided, but guests may bring their own.
