Central Wyoming wins MCC Invite; Indians tie for third

McCook Community College Golf

Central Wyoming Community College claimed the two-day McCook Community College Invitational Golf Tournament Friday besting Eastern Wyoming by 11 shots. MCC finished in a third-place tie with Northeastern Junior College.

“Thursday, I think everyone did a great job of persevering through some of the highest winds I’ve ever seen in a tournament setting,” said MCC Coach Grant Case.

Central Wyoming had a 310-312 advantage over Eastern Wyoming after Thursday’s rounds and improved by 27 shots Friday shooting a 283.

MCC was fourth after Thursday’s round, one shot behind Northeastern Junior College (328-329). The Indians shot a 310 Friday and finished tied with the Plainsmen, with both teams having a two-day total of 639.

“There are lots of positives to take away from this week,” said Case. “All the guys felt like their score didn’t reflect how well they played, so this next week we’ll have to clean up the unnecessary mistakes that are inflating our scores.”

Freshmen Louis Yin (Tainan, Taiwan) and Jeb Kastens (Atwood, Kan.) both tied for team-best honors finishing with a two-day total of 160. Yin shot a first-round 83 and came back with a 77 Friday. Kastens shot a team-low 76 Friday after posting an 83 on Thursday.

Sophomore Cole Graham (McCook) and freshman Braiden Portie (Arvada, Colo.) were four shots back of their teammates and tied with 164. Portie had MCC’s low first-round score, shooting a 78 on Thursday. Graham had rounds of 84 and 80.

“I was very happy for Braiden to turn in a 78 in those tough conditions Thursday,” said Case.

Freshman Joackym Mahy (Andenne, Belgium) had an 18-stroke improvement Friday shooting a 77 after posting a 94 in the first round. He finished with a 172.

Jalen Collicott (freshman, McCook) was 19 shots better on Friday. He had rounds of 105 and 86.

“I’m very happy and proud of Joackym and Jalen for bouncing back from their higher Thursday scores,” said Case.

MCC will join the Region IX field next Thursday and Friday in Sterling, Colo. to play in the Northeastern Junior College Tournament at Riverview Golf Course.

“We’re all excited for another week of good practice before we head to Sterling next week,” said Case.
