All-terrain wheelchairs now available at Smith Falls

Smith Falls State Park now offers all-terrain wheelchairs to help visitors with mobility challenges experience the beauty of the park in north central Nebraska.

The park has two GRIT chairs, one for adults and one for children. Each chair is a lever‑driven, all‑terrain wheelchair with mountain‑bike wheels, a seat belt, removable seatback, adjustable footrest, and trail handles for extra support.

“Whether you’re visiting the falls, exploring the park, or simply enjoying time outdoors with family and friends, we want everyone to have the opportunity to experience this special place,” said Cody Niewohner, park superintendent.

Visitors wishing to use the chairs should stop by the park office, which is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through September. Starting Oct. 1, chairs will be available when staff is present for checkout.

Chairs are available first-come, first served at no cost. Guests will need photo identification to check out a chair, and park staff will assist visitors with learning how to use the chair.

Smith Falls SP, located east of Valentine, is home to the state’s highest waterfall accessible via a boardwalk that is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. The park is a popular destination for campers and wildlife watchers, as well as for those exploring the Niobrara National Scenic River.
