1868 Foundation helps power the present and future of the Nebraska State Fair

Opening night event, official gift shop, and donor-funded improvements all reflect mission to support, celebrate, and sustain the State Fair
Whether you’re buying official State Fair merchandise, watching a concert, enjoying the comforts of a shaded park bench, or applauding young livestock exhibitors, chances are the Nebraska State Fair 1868 Foundation had something to do with it.
Founded to preserve and enhance Nebraska’s proudest tradition, the 1868 Foundation has invested nearly $3 million in infrastructure and programming improvements since 2010 and helped secure $20 million in ARPA funding to support long-term development at Fonner Park. From visible additions like video boards and seating areas to behind-the-scenes support like youth livestock premiums and capital campaigns, the Foundation’s work touches nearly every corner of the Fair.
“This is about more than one week in August,” said Lindsey Koepke, Executive Director of the 1868 Foundation. “Our mission is to sustain and grow the Fair for future generations by supporting youth, celebrating community, and honoring our agricultural heritage.”
The Foundation has enhanced the Nebraska State Fair in a variety of ways through programming and creature comforts like park benches and concerts — like the Darryl Worley and Marshall Tucker Band show they are co-sponsoring this year.
“From high-profile events to hands-on improvements, the 1868 Foundation is helping to power both the present and future of the Nebraska State Fair,” Koepke said.
Opening Night Celebration: The Great Nebraska Steak Debate
The Foundation kicks off the Fair in style with its Blue Ribbon Kickoff: The Great Nebraska Steak Debate on Friday, August 22. Now in its fifth year, this one-of-a-kind event features local celebrities teamed up with chefs to prepare their best Certified Piedmontese steak recipes. Guests enjoy samples from multiple Nebraska beef breeds — Certified Angus, Sterling Silver, American Wagyu, and more — paired with Nebraska wines and cold beverages.
“It’s a flavorful, festive way to kick off the Fair, and one of the hottest tickets of opening night,” Koepke said.
More than $1 million has been raised through this event since its inception, funding everything from capital improvements to youth programming in 4-H and FFA.
