McCook Fisherman Find Success On The Lake
On June 4th and 5th, B.A.S.S. Federation held its annual State High School Bass Fishing Championship and this year it was held at Red Willow Reservoir. The Nebraska B.A.S.S. Federation held two tournaments over the weekend 1) it's COVID Qualifier for the 2021 BASS Nation High School Championship as well as qualifying 2 teams for the 2022 BASS High School Championship.
On Day One, McCook High Schools Ryan Unger and Matthew Nichols weighed in the largest bag of 5 fish on Friday to win the 2021 Qualifier and will attend the National High School Championship at Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee. Ryan and Matthew's weight was 20.87 which is the largest bag in Nebraska High School BASS history. Monte Wagner of McCook was the boat captain for Matthew and Ryan.
On Day Two, McCook High Schools Cole Graham and Canyon Hosick weighed in the largest bag of 5 fish, 20.65 lbs on Saturday to win the 2022 Qualifier and will attend the 2022 High School BASS Championship. Chad Graham was the boat captain for Cole and Canyon.
BASS also crowned the 2021 Nebraska High School Bass Champion for a two day event and that went to Matthew Nichols and Ryan Unger with a combined weight of 37.05 lbs for their 10 bass weighed in. Matthew and Ryan will fish in the 2022 High School BASS Championship next year.
McCook High School Bass Team also had Colton Stevens, Kaden Wilhelmson, Cadde Beeby, Keagon Reece, Deacon Walkington-Kinne, Jarett Walter, Victor Schwartz and Hunter Hansen Participating in the event this past weekend.
The BASS portion of the tournaments was also run in conjunction with the SAF tournaments on Saturday June 5. SAF/TBF held its High School State Championship on Saturday with the weights for each team being used for the two tournaments. McCook's Cole Graham and Canyon Hosick used their 20.65 lbs to win the event and qualify for the 12th Annual 2021 High School Fishing World Finals on Lake Hartwell, Anderson, SC on June 30- July 3, 2021. Colton Stevens and Kaden Wihelmson placed fourth with over 18 lbs, and Matthew Nichols and Ryan Unger finished 5th with 16.18 lbs.
SAF/TBF also completed their 2020-2021 Tournament Trial at Red Willow Reservoir on Saturday, The Tournament Trail consisted of five tournaments held from August through June 5th at Red Willow Reservoir, Lake McConaughy, Davis Creek, Sherman Reservoir and the Missouri River in Verdel, Nebraska. The Tournament Trail was won by Matthew Nichols and Ryan Unger with Monte Wagner and Darin Nichols as boat captains. Ryan and Matthew will compete for a National Championship and World Championship on Lake Hartwell, Anderson SC on June 30-July 3 along with Cole and Canyon.
