MCC Golfers struggle at opening round of NJCAA National Tournament
LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a rough start to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Golf Championship Monday as the McCook Community College golf team, posted a season high score of 335 at the Rawls Course here, and no player broke 80 on the day.
“It was not a good day for MCC golf,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. The Indians had 12 doubles, three triples, and a quad. “That is not good scoring.”
The Indians are in 24th place after the first round among the 24 teams. Hutchinson Community College of Kansas leads the field, shooting an eight-under 280, three shots better than Midland Community College (Texas) and Odessa College (Texas).
“Our goals are still achievable but we'll have to hit more greens, make more putts, and have fewer high scores,” Loop said.
Region IX foe Eastern Wyoming is in 10th place in the four-round tournament, shooting a 10-over 298. Central Wyoming, which earned an at-large bid, is in 23rd place with a team score of 332. MCC is 24th, three shots back of Central Wyoming.
One bright spot for the Indians came on the 12th hole when freshman Filip Lanc', (Czech Republic) shot a hole-in-one on the par-three, with an eight-iron. He finished with an 86.
Sophomore Kojie Santos (Melbourne, Australia) shot the low MCC score on the day with an 80, which is tied for 86th. Deniz Sari, sophomore (Koblenz, Germany) carded an 82, and is tied for 99th place.
KC Carlson (second-year sophomore, Delta, Colo.) and freshman Adam Durband (Heswall, England) both posted scores of 87 on the day.
The tournament continues through Thursday.
