Indians down Luna 6-3 to open Region IX tournament
The McCook Community College baseball team won the opening game of the Region IX tournament Friday 6-3 and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series against Luna Community College.
The Indians scored a run in the first, three in fourth and two more in the ninth to back the complete-game pitching of sophomore Arjun Huerta (Willemstad, Curacao) who struck out 12 Rough Riders.
The win was the 30th of the season as the Indians improve to 30-25 and continue the series Saturday at the Jaycees Sports Complex with a game at noon. If Luna wins Game 2 of the series, a third game will be played. An MCC win moves the Indians to the double-elimination part of the post-season in Colorado Springs May 13-16 at the UCHealth Field.
MCC opened the scoring Friday in the first inning when freshman Jordan DeMarce (Las Vegas, Nevada) lined a one-out double and later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Zack Beatty (Maple Park, Ill.)
Luna’s Francisco Ochoa hit a three-run home in the fourth to give the Rough Riders a 3-1 lead but the Indians responded with their own-three run inning in the bottom of the frame. Caleb Eiguren, (sophomore, Broomfield, Colo.) led off the inning with a single, and was followed with back-to-back one out singles from freshman Benny Brockmoller (North Platte) and sophomore Elijah Munoz (Big Spring, Texas) to pull MCC back to a 3-2 deficit. With two outs, Brockmoeller stole home to tie the game and DeMarce singled to right field and Munoz advanced home on an error to put MCC up 4-3.
Huerta made the score stand as he tossed shutout ball from the fifth inning on. The score stood at 4-3 until MCC scored twice in the seventh. DeMarce led off with a walk and scored on a triple by sophomore Ricardo Hernandez (sophomore, Ponce, Puerto Rico). Beatty singled in Hernandez.
Huerta, allowed 10 hits and one walk to go along with his 12 strikeouts. He improves to 5-3 on the season and pushes his strikeout total on the year to 70 in 54.1 innings.
MCC had 12 hits. DeMarce reached base four times on the afternoon with a double, a walk and two singles. Munoz had three hits, Brockmoeller and Beatty each had two.
Luna Community College goes to 13-24 and a loss in Game 2 Saturday would end their season.
